The Diabetes Management and Education Center at The Queen’s Medical Center – West O`ahu provides counseling and education for individuals with Type 1, Type 2 and gestational diabetes.  We provide both individual and group education for better control and management of this disease.  Whether you have recently been diagnosed, your treatment regimen has changed, or you simply want to take charge of your diabetes, we can offer individualized plans for meals, exercise and weight management, self-monitoring of glucose, and more. 

Our programs include:

  • Medical Management
  • Medical Nutrition Therapy/Dietary Counseling
  • Diabetes in Pregnancy Program

Diabetes Self-Management Education

  • For all people with diabetes, whether newly diagnosed or needing new strategies for successful diabetes management.
  • We provide comprehensive education on the many aspects of diabetes care and lifestyle management, provided by professionals with experience in diabetes care and education.
  • Sessions may be individual or in a classroom setting depending on how you learn best.
  • Our program is interactive, giving you time to practice the skills and tools you may use to improve your diabetes self-management.
  • Once you complete the program, ongoing support is provided through office visits and phone calls.

Medical Management

  • Nurse Practitioners will work with you and your primary care provider to start and adjust medication so you can maintain blood sugar balance.
  • Nurse Practitioners specializing in diabetes care can recommend or prescribe the latest technologies for medication and monitoring.
  • Services are provided in partnership with your primary care provider, obstetrician, or endocrinologist.
  • Your treatment will be personalized to address your medical conditions, schedule, activity level and lifestyle.

Medical Nutrition Therapy

  • A Registered Dietitian will help you integrate diabetes nutrition and self-management skills into your lifestyle to enhance your diabetes management.
  • Your sessions are personalized to your medical conditions, schedule, activity, and lifestyle.
  • Education is provided by a Registered Dietitian with experience in diabetes care and education. The dietitian will coordinate comprehensive meal planning with your diabetes primary care provider.
  • Appointments are also available for nutrition and healthy eating plans for other medical conditions. 

Diabetes in Pregnancy Program

  • A Diabetes Nurse Educator and Registered Dietitian provide education and case management for women with pre-existing diabetes or gestational diabetes.
  • Learn about blood glucose monitoring, healthy eating, and diabetes care during pregnancy.
  • A dietitian will assist you in creating an individualized and appropriate meal plan to help manage your blood sugar and ensure healthy nutrition for your developing baby.
  • Ongoing support throughout your pregnancy through office visits, phone calls, or email to help you problem solve and maintain optimal blood glucose targets.



A referral from your diabetes care provider is required. Most diabetes services are
covered by medical insurance plans. Co-payment may apply.
